KS3 English Curriculum

The English curriculum at Cardinal Newman aims to enhance students’ appreciation for our wide literary heritage through exposing them to a wide range of sources to develop their reading and writing skills. We, as an English Department, endeavour to ensure that your child is well supported and achieves to the best of their ability through our comprehensive and extensive curriculum.

Each term, students will be exposed to a range of literature and non-fiction sources linked by theme/ topic and will build on skills established both at KS2 and in previous units of study. Students will be taught key vocabulary and terminology that can be used to enhance both their analytical and writing practice. Skills and knowledge taught will be checked and assessed through regular formative assessments throughout a half term (pit-stops) in which misconceptions will be swiftly addressed. Furthermore, summative assessments will take place each term which will focus on a range of skills and knowledge that has been developed throughout the units of study. Additionally, literacy and Fresh Start intervention is offered through the expertise of our Student Support Centre to ensure each child succeeds and achieves their full potential.

Students are given regular opportunity to reflect on their work and progress and are encouraged to develop their skills and enjoyment of the subject further through weekly home learning, library lessons and enrichment opportunities.

We also value the importance of enhancing students’ communication and presentation abilities through a range of Speaking and Listening activities both within lessons and through debate and public speaking opportunities.

KS3 Wider Reading

There is no doubt that students who are well read, are more successful in their examinations in both English Language and Literature. By reading, students are not only experiencing a range of texts, or allowing themselves to be engaged by writing, but they are also exposing themselves to different writing styles, new vocabulary, and imaginative ideas that they may not have otherwise known.

With this in mind, we strongly encourage students to read widely outside of the curriculum to develop their understanding and appreciation of the written word.
